Sugarille Brunello di Montalcino
This 27 hectare property, situated at an altitude of 350 metres above sea level, is nestled in the heart of Montalcino, neighbouring Fossacolle and Case Basse. It was purchased by Angelo Gaja in 1994, his first foray outside his native Langhe. It took Gaja a while to bring the wines up to the level of quality he consistently achieves with his Piemontese wines, but today his Brunellos from Pieve Santa Restituta rank with the finest in Montalcino.
This 4.5 – hectare vineyard is located in the township of Tavernelle to the south west of Montalcino. Sugarille was registered with this name by the priest Giovanni Sampieri in 1547. Soils here are mostly clay, marl and limestone with a significant presence of Galestro. Vines are 30-40 years old on average.
The grapes from the different vineyards are fermented and macerated separately for three weeks. They are then aged in oak for 24 months before being blended and then aged for another six months in concrete vats.
