Intense ruby red in colour with elegant aromas of red cherries and hints of spice. The palate is refined and elegant, with an intense concentration of rose and red fruit flavours, mustard, cardamom, mint and tobacco. A full-bodied wine, with spicy, silky tannins and a long, persistent finish.
Ugo Contini Bonacossi IGT
The Capezzana estate, 24 kilometres north west of Florence, is owned by the Contini Bonacossi family. The younger generation is now firmly in charge of the estate’s 80 hectares of vineyard, with daughter Benedetta Contini Bonacossi as winemaker and Francesco Bernabei as consultant winemaker. The wines and the olive oil have an elegance which marks this estate out from the crowd.
The grapes for this wine come from the Viticciana vineyard, which was personally designed by Ugo Contini Bonacossi himself. This hilly site sits at 150 metres above sea level and offers the Sangiovese vines an ideal south-facing exposure. The soil is composed of clay schist and limestone.
Grapes are hand-harvested at the end of September and carefully selected at the winery. They are then pressed and vinified in stainless steel vats at 26-28°C for seven days with skin contact for another 13 days. The wine is then moved to a mix of new and used French oak barriques for 18 months, during which time malolactic fermentation takes place. The wine is then bottled and kept in bottle for a minimum of 12 months before release.
